Defensive Driving Course
The numbers are staggering. Every day, about 120 people die
in motor vehicle accidents. Approximately 2.3 million people
are seriously injured every year.
Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death in young
adults between the ages of 16 and 24. The costs in terms of
motor vehicle damage, medical expenses, wage loss and insurance
administration add up to almost $100 billion a year.
And that doesn't even to begin to measure the pain and suffering,
grief and loss.
According to the National Safety Council, 90% of all motor vehicle
crashes are attributable, at least in part, to driver behaviors. Let's put a stop to this. The Defensive Driving
Course was developed as part of the National Safety Council's
campaign to reduce deaths, injuries and economic loss due to
traffic accidents.
The Chesapeake Region Safety Council offers classes for both
groups and individuals. A variety of daytime, evening, weekend
and Saturday programs are regularly offered. All graduates receive
certificates of completion. In some instances, a reduction
in insurance premiums may be possible.
This program shows problem drivers the direct connection between their attitude and their driving behaviors. It helps drivers, themselves, to recognize that their reckless driving and its consequences results from their own choices. It guides them towards accepting responsibility for their actions.
And it's the right thing to do.
